Bieberhaus
Ernst-Merck-Strasse 9 in Hamburg
The Bieber-House is a huge building (“Kontorhaus”) which was once a well-known entertainment centre, containing a cinema, theme eatery, and shops. This tradition will be continued by the relocation of the Ohnsorg-Theatre. The building, which was constructed by the architects J.G. Rambatz and W. Jollasse from 1908 till 1910, is situated between Ernst-Merck-Straße, Kirchenallee and Hachmannplatz in prominent and favourable location in close vicinity to the Hamburger Schauspielhaus and the main station. The Bieber-House got its name from Dr. T. A. Bieber, Director of the boys’ school which was originally situated on the property.
The new theatre hall of the Ohnsorg-Theatre - with more than 400 seats, a studio stage, a spacious two-storeyed lobby with theatre café and the rooms for the theatre administration - will be integrated into the first three floors of the eastern part of the Bieberhaus, in the area of the former cinema. The remaining office spaces in the upper floors, which are used by the finance authority Hamburg-Oberalster since 1970, as well as several commercial spaces in the western ground floors will be retained.
